10 Family Days Out in North East England for Easter Weekend (all FREE or for under £6)

I love a family day out over Easter Weekend - this year we're heading Seaton Delaval Hall to take part in their Egg Hunt followed by fish and chips by the seaside. I can't wait! This is a pretty inexpensive day out for us as we're NT members and I'd recommend if you are too (check out my guide to other Egg Hunts with National Trust here).

10 Family Days Out in North East England for Easter Weekend (all FREE or for under £5)

As I've been looking for things to do over the Easter Holidays, I've been quite shocked at the price of some events. I found one event that was £40 a head! Yikes! I always think you don't need to spend loads of cash to have a good day out and I've put together a guide to some of the best free or low-cost events in our region that are taking place over Easter weekend. Let me know if you fancy any of these or you have any other recommendations for us to try.

Sat 31 March | Sci-fair at South Shields Museum | FREE entry

Visit South Shields Museum between 12noon - 3:30pm for their FREE Sci-fair. From Doctor Who to Star Trek, there will be a stall and memorabilia for everyone's inner geek. Find out more here.

Sat 31 March & Sun 1 April |  Consett Egg Hunt | FREE entry

Join Mr Mixologist for his FREE Egg Hunt around Consett which has been supported by local businesses. There are lots of fab prizes and there's an after-party too. Details are still being finalised so follow the event page here to keep in the loop.

Mon 2 April | Bank Holiday Family Party at The Keel Row | FREE entry

The Keel Row's fabulous annual Bank Holiday Party returns this year from 12noon. There will be free pop and sweets for the kids, a free bouncy castle, face painting, live music from 4pm plus a special Gin and Cocktail bar too. Find out more here.

Fri 30 March  - Mon 2 April | The Easter Bunny & Captain Raggy Beard's Pirate School at Woodhorn Museum | FREE for annual pass-holders and children, £6 for adults

Kids go free at Woodhorn Museum and adult admission costs just £6 for the full year. There's a lot going on over Easter weekend including a visit from the Easter Bunny (children will receive a small treat) and Captain Raggy Beard's Pirate School where children will learn top Pirate skills from the best. Pirate fancy dress is encouraged. Find out more here.

All Weekend | Quayside Seaside | FREE to visit

Newcastle's Quayside Seaside is set to open on 16 March this year and Easter Weekend is a perfect time to make that first visit. As well as 350,000 tonnes of sand, palm trees and beach huts, this year will see a couple of new additions including a playground with slide and fireman's pole plus a climbing wall. Little Fishy is taking over the fish shack and are 100% recommended by us.

Sun 1 and Mon 2 April | Easter Bunny Hunt at Aln Valley Railway | £5 per adult and £2 per child

My children have always loved a train ride but often they can work out fairly expensive, Aln Valley Railway's fares are a bargain at £5 per adult and £2 per child to ride all day. Under 5s are free and you only pay for your first two children aged over 5 which really helps out larger families like us. Find out more here.

All Weekend | Egg Trail at Discovery Museum | £1 per trail

The Discovery Museum is FREE to visit and over Easter, children can take part in a special interactive trail for just £1. The task involves finding hidden eggs and solving clues around the museum and all completed entries will be entered into a prize draw to win a sweetie hamper. Find out more here.

Sat 31 March | Easter Extravaganza at Preston Park | Free for pass holders or £5 per family

The events at Preston Park really are spectacular and offer superb value for money. There are various Easter events happening over the weekend but their Easter Extravaganza really stood out for me. There will be an Easter trail around the walled garden, a walkabout bunny on stilts, Punch and Judy Shows, Balloon modelling, farmyard animals, face-painting and family crafts. This is all on top of the fantastic museum and play area too. Find out more here.

Mon 2 April | Roman Spring Fair at Arbeia Roman Fort | FREE entry

Browse the Roman Market, watch Gladiators do battle, have a go at archery or try some crafts in the historical tents. Find out more here.

All Weekend | Lambing Live at RSPB Saltholme | £2.50 per car (half price in honour of the lambing event) and £5 per child's activity pass

An activity pass includes access to the lambing shed to meet the new arrivals, chick activities and handling in the vistor centre, finger puppet arts and crafts, adventure quest and games on the activity field including giant jenga, bowling and hoops. Accompanying adults go free. Find out more here.

Let me know if you have any special Easter plans this year.
